Sean Doherty grew up two towns over in Waltham, and before he owned a truck of his own he spent years loading them for other Boston-area movers. He saw the same thing often enough to remember it clearly: a crew shows up on move day and the number on the invoice isn’t the number quoted on the phone. In 2015 he started Next Step Moving and Storage in Belmont to do it differently — his own trucks, his own crew, one flat rate in writing before the first box moves.
Sean still takes the harder jobs himself, especially the triple-decker moves near Belmont Center, and the long hauls that route his trucks out past Trapelo Road toward Hartford and Portland. Those narrow, turned staircases chip a rushed crew’s paint every time — his crew knows to slow down instead. Office manager Maureen Kelly builds the schedule and signs off on every written quote before it goes out; crew chiefs Tony Marchetti and Devon Walsh run the trucks on move day, with Tony handling the long-distance lanes and Devon rigging the pianos and gun safes that come up in Belmont’s older triple-deckers.
What that adds up to, in plain terms:
- Ten people on payroll, not a load board — meet the crew
- No fuel, stair, or mileage surcharges added after the walkthrough
- A written quote before move day, not an estimate that grows once the truck is loaded
