Most questions we get on the phone are less about whether we can do the job and more about the details — what a flat rate covers, what happens if the weather turns, whether the crew that quoted you is the crew that shows up. Below are the questions Maureen Kelly and our office field most often, answered the way we’d talk you through them if you called our Belmont office directly. Still have one that’s not here? Reach out or start a free quote and ask it there — we’d rather clear it up before move day than after.
What Belmont Households Want to Know Before Move Day, Answered
Is Next Step Moving and Storage a real moving company?▾
Yes — we are a fully licensed and insured local moving company, not a broker or a referral service. We run our own trucks and uniformed crews on every job, with a Massachusetts DPU permit and US DOT/MC authority on file, and owner Sean Doherty still works the bigger jobs himself.
How far out do I need to book a date with your crew?▾
Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable for most local moves; over the summer and around the first and last of the month, dates fill faster and we'd rather see four weeks of lead time. Long-distance corridor moves benefit from even more notice since a truck has to be routed for the return leg.
How do you price a job before anyone's walked through my place?▾
Most quotes start with a phone walkthrough — room by room, stairs, anything oversized — or a set of photos you text or email over. From that we build a flat rate in writing. If what's actually there on move day matches what you described, that number doesn't move.
What's the deposit for, and do I get it back?▾
A $200 refundable deposit holds your date on the schedule and comes off your final invoice. Cancel 72 hours or more before your move and it's refunded in full.
Can I change my mind after I've signed the quote?▾
You can reschedule or cancel — just do it with enough notice that we can offer that date to another household. Cancellations inside the 72-hour window may not get the full deposit back, since we've already turned other work away for that slot.
What's left off a flat-rate quote that I might get charged for separately?▾
The flat rate covers exactly what's described in the walkthrough. Things that come up on the day itself — an extra stop that wasn't mentioned, disassembling a built-in wall unit, or hazardous items we can't legally transport — get called out and priced before we touch them, not added quietly to the invoice.
What happens if something of mine gets damaged?▾
Every move carries $1M cargo coverage. If something is damaged in transit, tell your crew chief or call the office the same day and we'll walk you through a claim.
Does a New England winter actually change my move date?▾
It can. A nor'easter or ice storm between December and March can close roads like Trapelo Road with almost no warning, and we'd rather move your date a day than risk a crew or your belongings on bad roads. We call as soon as we know weather is going to affect a scheduled move.
Do I need to handle my pets and plants before the crew gets there?▾
Yes — keep pets in a closed room or with a sitter for the day, and plan to transport plants yourself if the move is long-distance, since most movers (us included) won't put live plants on a truck for a multi-day haul.
Am I expected to tip the crew, and how much is normal?▾
Tipping isn't required, but it's customary and the crew appreciates it — most households tip somewhere between $20 and $40 per mover on a local job, more for a longer or harder haul, split however feels right.
Can a Belmont-based crew handle a move that crosses state lines?▾
Yes — long-distance corridor moves are a regular part of what we do, from Belmont out to New York, Hartford, Providence, and Portland, covered under our interstate authority with one crew loading, driving, and unloading.
What We Handle For Belmont Households
Local Moving
A one-bedroom walk-up in Belmont Center or a five-bedroom colonial out in Newton — same crew, same flat rate, no subcontractor added to the invoice partway through.
Learn more →Long-Distance Moving
Four lanes leave Belmont on a regular week — up to Portland, down to Providence, west to Hartford, or the long pull into New York — and Tony Marchetti builds the drive-time estimate off the actual route, not a flat per-mile guess.
Learn more →Apartment & Condo Moving
We call ahead for the resident parking permit near Belmont Center and check the stairwell width on triple-deckers before move day, so nobody’s improvising a plan on the sidewalk.
Learn more →Office & Commercial Moving
We schedule office and commercial moves around your building’s quiet hours, not ours, so file cabinets and equipment travel carefully and your team is back at their desks the same day.
Learn more →Packing & Specialty Item Services
Every box and roll of tape gets priced before move day, and packing morning flows straight into loading afternoon with no crew change in between.
Learn more →Storage Solutions
Closing dates don’t always line up — when yours doesn’t, we inventory every box, hold it clean and dry, and bring it all back exactly as it left your old address.
